Yes, we do all get slapped by life from time to time. I got slapped, a couple times from different sources, a few weeks ago. So then what do you do?

I think our first knee-jerk reaction is to act as if we aren’t affected by the things that are affecting us. Like we think ‘Being Strong’ means ‘Being Un-affected’. I don’t think so. I believe that being strong means accepting where you are and how you are feeling and owning it, being authentic. Then you can figure out how to take it to the next level, moment  by moment.

If you walk into a room and are trying to pretend that you are feeling something you’re not, people will pick up on it. Even if you aren’t aware of it, you are putting out energy that tells others what is going on with you. And even if they are not aware of it, they are picking up on those vibes. You will end up feeling weak and unempowered.

So what are you feeling? What is authentically YOU in this moment? It might be scary, it might feel weak, you may have had your heart stomped on and are feeling like a fool. Own it. Yes, it is scary, but you will end up feeling stronger and more empowered. Not to mention you will be better able to handle the next time you’re in a situation like this.

If you need to cry, let it out!! It will actually feel good and put you on the road to healing much faster than holding it in and pretending to be your idea of ‘strong’. There is strength in crying and letting it out! You can cry alone and you can cry with friends. You get to decide. But let it out.

Bottom line is- there is STRENGTH in VULNERABILITY! Allowing yourself to be vulnerable shows you are authentic and you certainly are NOT weak. It’s hard to allow yourself to be vulnerable, right? It’s a practiced art. Like I said, the knee-jerk reaction is to act all “Oh, I don’t care, that doesn’t bother me, I’m super tough” when in fact it DOES bother you and builds up if you don’t let it out.

If you have a broken heart for whatever reason, let it out. Find your buttons for the things that make you feel better, even if just a little better. Music, gym classes, movies, shows, you decide what works for you.  Reach out to your friends. Make plans so you have things to look forward to. If you like to be involved in activities, start a project- a mutually beneficial project with someone you enjoy working with. Get outside. Take care of yourself. That could mean a haircut, a walk in the park, ice cream, a new outfit, a massage, anything that makes you feel like you are giving attention to yourself.

And please don’t judge yourself. Give yourself a break.
