Today was the final day of the ECA Fitness Convention in NYC. I took a ton of classes, as I always do, to keep current, get new ideas, become inspired by my peers, and be challenged.

As Sandra Bullock says “Always choose people that challenge you and are smarter than you. Always be the student. Once you find yourself to be the teacher, you’ve lost it.”

It’s an interesting statement to make. I am definitely a teacher, but am constantly learning from my students. This is a give and take game, folks. I certainly don’t know it all and am more than willing to learn. And what I do know, I want to share to help others enjoy their time on this planet more.

On the topic of being the student, which is the role I played for the last three days at this fully inundating fitness convention, one of the many classes I took was Calvin Wiley’s ‘Diary of Step’.

Talk about challenges, I found myself about ten minutes in thinking “Oh my God, I can’t do this. These steps are too complicated, I probably should just leave.” What you do you do when you have a thought like this? For me, if it’s a question of “Can I do this?” I usually stay. If it’s a question of “Do I really want to do this?” then I answer that question and follow through with what is authentic for me.

In this case, I wanted to stay, I wanted to be able to do the choreography. But I didn’t think I could. So I stuck it out. The more I thought about it, the less I was able to do. I was getting frustrated so I decided to do an experiment and stop the useless mind chatter. I stopped worrying about it. What did I have to lose?

And guess what. My body knew the steps! I just followed along, and my body knew what to do. When I realized what was happening, I started thinking about it again because it ‘seemed’ too difficult, and I couldn’t believe I was getting it. Then I messed up again. Facing the wrong direction, completing blanking out and just standing there- really just thinking about it too hard.

I had to pull myself back to that space of letting my body show me what to do. And it worked! I think it takes practice to stop the worrying voice in your head. And patience with yourself. Each time I felt that voice saying “I can’t do it!” I replaced it with focus on what Calvin was doing onstage. And I trust myself, so it worked. I walked out of there feeling light, happy, recharged and empowered!

The message I’m trying to impart- whether it’s in a fitness class or in life is- GET OUTTA YOUR OWN WAY.  The perfect place to practice is in a fitness class of some sort. Have fun and play! Share your experiences- I would love to hear how you deal with that voice that says “I can’t do it”.
