I have a confession. I love New Year’s Eve. I love making resolutions.
I really REALLY enjoy plotting and planning and creating at the beginning of the year. January 1st just gives me a big BIG boost of inspiration and energy!
It really is a natural time to kick up some dust and create change. After all, change is the ONLY constant in this universe, so we might as well get that change moving in a direction that benefits us. And that requires challenging ourselves so that we grow and learn. If we do not set goals, then we are withering and dying. It’s that simple- grow and live, or wither and die.
But for some reason, ‘resolutions’ have become unpopular. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why. People come up with a whole fixer upper list for their entire lives and get all motivated and think they’ll do it ALL starting January 1st, and that approach, unfortunately, just does NOT work. But people try anyway, and then when their whole lives aren’t ‘fixed’ in a week, they become discouraged and wonder what is wrong with them.
Nothing is wrong with them and nothing is wrong with YOU! You’re just going about it wrong.
To keep it simple, I’m going to share THREE THINGS that you can do to get yourself to follow through on your resolutions this year.
1- Just pick ONE thing to focus on for January. Then just ONE thing for February. So on and so forth.
2- It’s critical that you do NOT rely on motivation. That stuff always fades. Besides, you experience the most positive effects when you act in spite of not feeling like it. Point is, rely on your COMMITMENT to the process. The “I will do this NO MATTER WHAT!” Revisit and re-commit to your process daily.
3- Allow yourself to be held accountable and allow others to support you. Have you tried to do this on your own in the past? And what happened? So this time, get some support! You can bring your friends on board, or your mother, husband, brother, sister, cousin. Or you could hire a coach in the area of your goal. Putting your money where your mouth is will automatically up the stakes for you and you’ll be more likely to follow through.
