Have you ever heard yourself say on past New Year’s Eve’s “I’m going to exercise more this year!” and really mean it? And then what happened???
If you’re like most of us, we care about our health, but can’t figure out how to save some time & energy for ourselves to exercise. We know that is it beyond important for our physical health & overall well being, but we can’t seem to make anything stick! Because, let’s be honest, at the end of the day (if there even IS an end to your day), there is just nothing left for us. We’ve given it all away, and we’re on empty.
So that means, why even torture ourselves with the idea of fitting in exercise if we know we can’t get ourselves to do it? Right?
If you want to go that route, of course you have that right. But I have a solution to this challenge.
I myself was up against a wall after having my first child 5 years ago. I had been teaching a minimum of 9 fitness classes a week in NYC, while also keeping up with private Pilates clients and personal training clients while I was pregnant with Shawn. It was crazy, but I was energized and loving it! I knew my life was about to change forever, and I was looking forward to it, but soaking up what I could of my old life first.
After Shawn was born in 2012, I followed Dr’s orders and did not exercise for 5 weeks. Once I got the ok, I was more than ready to get moving again. So, it was a bit of a shock when I realized my life was not my own to schedule and plan anymore. (I have to stop and lol a bit here. Duh). I literally could not schedule in a workout. I never knew what this kid was going to do next, but I DID know for sure that if I planned anything, I could expect that he would A- wake up from his nap, B- start screaming and demand to be fed, C- just start screaming, or D- poop. Oh, and I can’t even tell you the number of times that he fell asleep on top of me and I was terrified to move for fear of waking him up, so I’d just sit where I sat for who knows how long until he woke up (tell me I’m not alone here!)
What to do? I was feeling pretty crappy from lack of movement, and lack of any sort of control over my own life. So I began starting each day looking for any little itty bitty amount of time that I could eek out some exercise, both for my body and my peace of mind. I also had a LOT of weight to lose and was tired of carrying it around. I would do squats while waiting for a bottle to heat up, or core work while he was doing his tummy work. I began to train myself to look for my opportunities.
And I learned that, if you look for your opportunities, you will eventually find them.
I began to carve out 10 minutes of time for exercise on a regular basis. Sometimes more, but that 10 minutes became a standard. I couldn’t schedule it. I just had to start my day looking for that pocket of time. And that 10 minutes made all the difference.
I stuck with it on a daily basis, and as a result, I came out of my mental fog, started to feel stronger, mentally AND physically again, was more present for my baby, and lost the extra 50 pounds I was carrying around!
So when I tell you that 10 minutes of exercise a day can make a huge difference in your life, I’m talking from personal experience.
In the past 5 years, I’ve also guided other women to learn to carve out that 10 minutes for themselves every day. I learned from my own experience that it is important to aim for a small doable chunk like 10 minutes. I’ve seen women lift their energy and change their lives from starting out with 10 minutes of daily exercise. It makes a difference!
